He's being stupid and alienating his conservative voter base by doing so, but this is the issue with the two-party system. In the primaries, GOP candidates have to look as conservative as possible. Then in the general, they have to backtrack, until in the end we don't know where they stand on anything.
Regardless of what he's saying now, this is what you need to keep in mind:
1) Gun control is not one of Trump's core campaign issues. Any pandering to the gun control camp that he's doing will be far down on his agenda when he's president, if it even makes it onto the to-do list at all.
2) Trump is far more pro-gun than Hillary. His comments are disturbing, but they are still far less unhinged than Hillary's stance on the issue.
3) The Orlando shooting attack occurred because of Islam, not guns. If you want to see attacks like that stop, you need a candidate who wants to stop Muslim immigration, and who is willing to look at the issues Islam poses for western society.
Trump is in hot water with these comments, but I wouldn't expect him to keep on with this rhetoric for too long.
