For those of you who are pro banning guns, please tell me this, how will we get illegally obtained guns out of the hands of criminals? Most guns used in homicide are illegally obtained. A very small fraction of people murdered by guns are murdered by legal gun owners. How can we assure that we are not just taking guns out of the hands of responsible gun owners and leaving them in the hands of criminals? Also, why do articles like this refuse to group gang related mass shootings along with other "mass shootings"? Why is it that Chicago can have 60+ people shot in a weekend, and nobody brings up the topic of gun control, or even discusses it?

You can't keep guns out of criminal's hands. That's actually the biggest problem with gun control. Sure, you can argue that MAYBE it will limit the amount of mass shootings in America. It might and it might not, but mass shootings account for a tiny fraction of all gun crime in America. If the solution to this tiny problem is to limit guns to people who actually deserve and need guns to defend themselves from actual criminals and actual problems, how can you call that a solution? There is answer as obvious as gun control to the problem of mass shootings in America if the desired outcome is actually the safety and wellbeing of American citizens. It just doesn't work that way, and it never has. They're illegally obtained, but they were legally produced because there is a huge open legal market. Of course the prospect of purging the black market of guns is a long and arduous task requiring good, old-fashioned police wet-work, but the first step is to stop the source.

The idea isn't to take guns out of everyone's hands, its to tighten laws which aim to filter out criminals having them. Its the same principal as a security screening at an airport which ensures that nobody brings weapons and illegal substances over the plane. However, if you have legitimate reasons to and declare everything, there are always ways to get such objects onto the plane via luggage.

False Lanza killed his mother to get his guns and the San Bernardino shootes were a straw purchase. Plus the majority of mass shootings are gang related and are predominantly committed with illegally acquired firearms. There are things we could do to actually reduce the occurrence of the white mass shooters if nothing else.
1. Reform how the media reports on these events to reduce copycats and the pursuit of a new "high score".
2 God help me we need to look to Australia. Not their gun laws, but their mental health services.
3 A bipartisan review and reform of the background check system. This is a tough one because nobody trusts the left not to fuck it up and turn it into a way to shadow ban the second Amendment. The terrorists watch list system would have to be radically changed in order for it to be made Constitutionally applicable to the background check system.
4. This is by far and away the hardest one and in my opinion the most important. We need to start holding people who are complaisant or enable the shooter accountable in some way. Lanza's father moved out of town because he was scared of his son. He should have received some kind of reviews or investigation to see if he could be prosecuted in some way. The family of the Orlando shooter knew something was wrong. He sold his house to his sister for 10 dollars that's not normal.
5. Lastly we need a responsible way for people who are found unfit to bear arms to retain their property. Earmark a trust system into the mental health aspect that if they successfully completed treatment they get them back. If they cannot be made safe to own guns they get time and support to sell them and redistribute them to responsible party's. And heirlooms can be held in a trust until the time to pass it along comes.
