The opposition leader before the election was actually a newly selected party leader who was chosen after the previous one (Jack Layton) died, and it was his predecessor who led the campaign in the previous election.
The previous opposition party was also in a unique position, because it was always only a "third place" party, yet saw massive surge of support toward the end of the campaign. However, without Jack Layton, I think the party lost its momentum and now they're back where everyone expects them to be. Normally, we have a Conservative or Liberal government and opposition leader.
