Missile defenses don't work against mirv's.
The only state of possible interception is DIRECTLY after launch.
Once the missile has reached orbital speeds (about 1/3 the way through its main phase) the chances of shoot down drop to 12%, anywhere after that is near 1% and the chances of shooting down even a single warhead during the third phase are so astronomically low you might as well throw rocks at it.
The total intercept chance on Aegis (a kinetic based system) is total at about 8% right now against most of Russia's arsenal, and at about 60% on the less developed arsenals (Pakistan, India, China, N.K)
Even on Russia's nuclear tipped interceptors (which far FAR better against warheads and mirv clouds than American interceptors, aka they actually hit) only have a 22% chance to shoot down, and have literally the same chance to shoot down at launch and after launch.
Basically once the missile begins its ballistic entry arc you literally have a better chance of shooting it down with your own nuclear missiles than you do with interceptors; especially retarded kinetic systems.

The pellets would be about the size of a cherry, would be fired at Mach 20, and the satellite could fire HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of these pellets at a rocket in few seconds.
With no atmosphere to stop them, the projectiles could theoretically be fired at ludicrous speeds, far faster than the missiles themselves. they'd also have infinite range, hampered only by line of sight and travel time of the projectiles.

You also do not seem to understand. For these satellites to be ANY sort of use they would have to be in geostationary orbit unless you wanted to literally make millions of them which is 35,786 kilometres, the maximum height of a ballistic missile arc is 1200 km.
The satellites would be 34,500km away. At even mach 20 (rail guns, even the largest ones here on earth that require HUGE capacitors, and would take months to charge on solar panels only reach about mach 6 at muzzle ) that's 7km/s. Lets use the more resonable realistic and actually achievable mach 6-7, that's 2.4 km/s. It would take literally 4 hours to reach the maximum height of the missile. Even at your absolutely ludicrous mach 20 it would take around one and a half hours....
The total flight time of a ballistic missile is around 25 minutes. You would literally have to shoot before the missile launched to even have a hope of shoot down.
Satellites that aren't in geo-stationary orbit would also be incredibly easy to dodge because of the speed they'd be moving and the incredibly shallow angle of attack they could cover.
This is why satellites are a retarded idea until turbo lasers are a thing.
Also needles to say, over vast distances inaccuracy of thousands of a degree will end up far off target by even 20-30m. The precision required is basically impossible, not to mention the feasibility of a mach 20 railgun on a satellite, or not having them in geo-stat orbit OR the time of flight.

No, they aren't. Tsar Bomba was, for all intents and purposes, undeliverable. Doubling the yield on a nuke does double the damage done, and you reach a point of diminishing returns. You can do the same amount of damage with a few smaller bombs for a lot cheaper than you can with a single big one. In the areas downwind from from major targets, you need to be shielded from Gamma radiation for 14-16 days.

Using an earlier estimate (which might very well have been surpassed by now) of 5.2 Mt per ton of weight, that gives us (roughly) 50 Mt. Last I used a calculator, 50/15 (smallest load) wasn't 550kt or even 800kt per warhead, but 3.3 Mt, assuming a light load. ~5.2 Mt per warhead (MIRV as you said) with the larger ones (or less, but a large amount of countermeasures for a near guarantee of no interception).
They probably rushed it as the wiki sources imply, so it wouldn't surprise me if they had a few ready for a war.
