Bullets likely would penetrate one person and strike another. In a densely packed club it would have been like shooting fish in a barrel. If there were not enough exits or some fag blocked one it would make it even worse. So I think it is plausible. I think anyone competent with a ar-15 could rack up similar casualties. He could have used 200-300 rounds which he could have easily fired in 7 minutes. 300 assumes he missed a third of his shots and none penetrated more than one person.

It's possible, rifles are rated for several hundred rounds per minute, but the rifle would get hot enough to cook a steak. Possibility of jamming/part failure (due to warping) is very very high.
Also the shooter only fired a few hundred rounds, not a thousand, and that changes the argument from "is it likely, no?" to "this happened"
I've been to war, and know what 5.56 do and how far and fast they travel. To satisfy all accounts of the incident I am guessing he used a semi automatic shotgun. They look similar to AR15s in the dark to a non gun person. No way a girl got shot 12 times with multiple 5.56 still in her. It was buckshot. 1000 mini bullets fired from about 100 total shotgun rounds. Deadly and semi accurate, a perfect weapon for a nightclub shooting.

You gotta understand the AR platform is a duplicate of an m-16 and thus the mechanisms involved were engineered with automatic fire. From a manufacturing standpoint it's easier to get them to fire automatically than single shot.
Using a small C shaped piece of metal on the trigger mechanism allows for automatic fire.
Holding a belt loop with your trigger finger while firing allows automatic firing.
There are drum magazines that hold 150 rounds of 5.56 ammo that would mean only changing one mag per minute would allow you to fire 1000 rds/min
A guy with a stock AR firing one bullet at a time with 5 or 10 round magazines would have to be pretty good to pull it off though.
