Dude. It's a lingua franca. You get much more leeway than you would with many other languages as natives are used to a range of weird Mandarin. The only problem is if you look Chinese. Westerners are not expected to speak it perfectly.

Mandarin is not an international lingua franca - even amongst Chinese. Most 'diaspora' Chinese speak Cantonese or another Chinese language.
Also, English is already established throughout the world. China may eventually overtake the US as no.1 economy in the world but that's ignoring the fact that the 'Anglo-Saxon' people are spread across everal major countries. China has no equivalent to GB/Australia/NZ/Canada the way the US does. The core Anglosphere will remain, and probably always will remain, far larger economically than the 'Sinosphere' which is simpy PRC+Taiwan.
For Mandarin to displace it would require the complete collapse of the entire Anglosphere and even then it would be unlikely - non English speaking countries would continue to use it as the already established lingua franca.
Then there's the huge difference in terms of how difficult they are to learn. English is familiar enough (in terms of shared lingusitic root, writing system etc) for speakers of other Indo-European languages to learn without too much difficulty. Mandarin, on the other hand, is completely foreign and the writing system is so demented that even educated native speakers struggle with it.
Any foreigner who learns Mandarin to working fluency has achieved something very impressive and certainly worth putting on their CV but it's never going to be a very common thing.

The writing system is complete shit, it's hundred times worse than the fuck-ups English language has (e.g. letters that aren't pronounced but are still there, because why the fuck not (e.g. debt) or letters that sound the same sometimes and completely different other times (e.g. c and k)).
If I had to learn an Asian language, it would either be Japanese (though Kanji and Hiragana suck, only Katakana is sane) or Korean, which has a very logical and easy writing system. It's also not a tonal language.

Not really. It's easier than many other tonal languages. The reason the Chinese might struggle is that most are native speakers of other Chinese languages (which are incorrectly called dialecrs) and even read the characters in their language rather than Mandarin.
