Atheism does not only denote a disbelief in God, it is as a matter of fact, disbelief in anything that is non-materialistic in nature.
Would you expect a die-hard materialist to die for a cause? Would you expect a liberal-atheist who lives for the day, to actually show any kind of alturism or sacrifice, or in the words of A Leader, fanaticism, in pursuing a goal that is greater than the person who pursues it?
I think not. Conviction and dedication, fanaticism, these are all non-materialistic in their nature. They have a certain spiritual characteristic within them. They even present people with a form of afterlife: you may die while fighting for your cause, but while your cause still lives, so do you, and your efforts.
The fact that Marx himself was a materialist, and abstained from idealism, did not change the fact that the later communists were steadfast and fanatical believers in the communist cause. They were nominally "atheists" yet they still had a sense of spirituality, which I decribed above, they were willing to lay down their lives for a cause(the so-called communist heaven on earth) and knew that others would pick up the flag where they left off. It didn't matter to them that they were not going to go to Paradise/Hell, but they believed in a different kind of afterlife, even though they didn't realize it themselves.
So I'd say that it is impossible for any steadfast believer of any cause to be "atheistic". I believe that atheism is for those who are too afraid to die, and too clinged to this life, that they cannot be bothered to waste even a second of it on anything and anyone but themselves, let alone spending it on God, morals, or a cause that requires sacrifice.
