The catch is that you can turn almost all of those settings off. Unless you've been using some obscure Linux kernel for the past 10 years people have been "spying" on you anyway, like if you've used Google or Facebook since then. If you really care about privacy it's a larger issue than Windows 10. People acting all flustered and outraged is just a reddit meme.

We ended up going back to the department and begging the faculty to have "Exceptional knowledge of Microsoft Windows or very similar operating systems" or something to that effect as a prerequisite. Your MICROSOFT password is being saved, on your MICROSOFT account, which you're completely free to skip with signing in with a local account.

Forced updates are annoying, that's it. Other than that, the OS is the most friendly Windows ever to me.

>>
>>77215602
They want to sell Windows as a service, with a subscription.
>>
>>77219714
No, I believe you.
I mean why is microsoft pushing everyone so hard to make the windows 10 update. They are giving it away for free, so why bother if anyone doesn't want it? They also said "it will only be free for 2015 then you all have to buy it". It is 6 months into 2016 and they still throw it away for free.
I don't understand them.
>>
>>77219714
There is a specific Windows update that places the large pop-up on your PC that forces you to schedule an upgrade time.

It's been found that pressing X, I shit you not, equates to "I agree" and some versions of it don't even let you close it out.

If you ignored it for too long, it could be what's forcing the automatic install.
>>
>>77219824
>>77219860
Install the GMX control Panel
>>
>>77219535
This.

There are tools out there that are designed to stop the telemetry and data gathering when you use windows 10. Honestly, I would use the enterprise version and lock it down completely by managing which services are allowed to do certain things. You're able to manage updates, as well, but in a limited fashion.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Everybody seems to be extremely confused at this as well.

Their marketing tactics to lure people in have been quite... interesting to say the least. Coming from a strategic communication background before going into graphics and games, I can 100% tell you they aren't hiding much aside from their end-goal.

For whatever reason, they want people on the OS so badly that they even let people install it for free. That drew so many in originally since nobody wants to pay for the OS. The money they get later is just icing on the cake. They even went as far to make certain computer chips simply incompatible with 7 and 8, thus forcing a 10 update after a certain day.

Can dump a post I saved from /g/ on mobile in a sec.

Ok, here. Bit more to it than the single update responsible for the scheduling of the "upgrade" to windows 10.

If you're on Win 7 with Service Pack 1, KB3035583, KB2952664, and KB3021917 are the files you want to remove. If you're on Win 8.1, KB3035583 and KB2976978.

That's got some pics that might help just in case you're confused about anything.

It's fucking disgusting. Only possible thing I can think of them wanting to actually do from a civilian level is sell information to Big Data analytics groups and researchers. The higher-level implications are out of my scope of knowledge, and it starts to get a little tinfoil after a while.

In the long-term, the amount of individual contracts they can set up with people for "muh data crunching" reasons can rake in so much money, we wouldn't believe it.

Half the Big Data shit today with independent researchers is literally "lol y do people buy whatever"-tier stuff while compiling disgustingly private information about people websites just store. Its actual validity is questionable because of people who just like looking at things they aren't interested in (referring to search history and product look-up habits), but then again, most regular people shop based on realistic interest. Generally speaking, people place a lot of value on honesty, so literally building lives around doing things you otherwise wouldn't normally do just to fool data collectors is unrealistic.

Partially why I refused to go into that field because of how invasive the actual numbers you're working with really are. I can see why Microsoft wants to move into that though.

It's just cheaper and theoretically easier. It's based off claims that they're helping other nations and making the company look better hurr durr muh heal the world plan.

yeah but it's a cargo cult. you could build finance around building big straw airplanes, or anything else really, as long as it harvests labor.

the problem is that if the activity isn't actually productive, then you have economic stagnation. you can distribute money around, jobs will exist, but life will slowly get shittier until people die.

we need to burn it all down.

Thanks, I checked it and I still have those files in my computer. But since I installed GMX the automatic updates have stopped and the pop up never appeared again. So maybe that's the last step? Regardless, GMX worked for me and I have it on monitor mode, meaning it will warn me of Microsofts jewish tricks.

>if it installs automatically then it most likely means you install other updates automatically too.

Most people don't look into what every last update they install is. They probably disable automatic updates and then when they're done with their computer for the day/week/month/whenever the fuck they finally turn it off for a few hours, they'll let it update and shut itself down when finished. If KB3035583 is installed, even if automatic updates are off, it won't matter. The point of that particular update is to schedule, download, and install Windows 10 to your system no matter if you want that particular piece of shit or not.

>>77221815

You're welcome. If you have those files, go ahead and get rid of them. GWX will be entirely unnecessary at that point, especially if you hide those particular updates from your available update list. That is, of course, unless GWX watches for other things beyond an attempt to force a shit OS on you. Can't really say for sure since I'm unfamiliar with the program, just saw at a glance and it looked like an anti-Win10 deal.

Yes, anyone can logically argue that 8 happened because they tried to break into the tablet world, failed horrendously with the Surface among actual tablet users, and pissed everybody off because 8 looked and ran like shit. However, instead of backtracking, they just released 10 and started inhaling information.

>Why is VLC such an excellent media playback program?

It is free open-source software, has a standard design that is easy for normies to use, and it's based off ffmpeg so it plays almost any media format.

If someone wants to play a video file and they don't know much about computers, I agree they should just install VLC.

My biggest issues with VLC is that it:

- Doesn't have high-quality upscaling/rendering compared to something like mpv when properly configured
- Doesn't have as good of support for streaming videos from websites like mpv does through youtube-dl
- Seeks through video very slowly compared to mpv.
- Requires the use of a graphical toolkit driven user interface and other bloat I don't want
- Lacks ability to be used from the command line or in a shell script compared to mpv
- Lacking miscellaneous features like being able to frame-step backwards, or an equivalent to mpv's mkv-subtitle-preroll

For Windows I agree. On Linux however, AMD GPUs currently have the best drivers available.

The proprietary Nvidia drivers have the best 3D performance, but they're a piece of shit that doesn't integrate with a typical Linux system otherwise.

The FOSS nvidia drivers are getting better, but still don't support many (newer) cards, they don't even have automatic re-clocking support, pretty terrible performance no matter what, and there's still many bugs to be worked out.

I'm never buying an Nvidia GPU again for these reasons.
