Of course it is weaker, it's a subversion group created by the CIA, just like Al-Qaeda, to divert attention towards a group, rather than individuals anonymously associated with another government agency in the dark. When public interest is invested in some scapegoat, so too does it make it painfully evident how an implosion is in process to disrupt the structure, and rearrange it however the agenda desires.

You fail to understand how jihad work and how the whole concept of what they call "tawheed" work so I will give you the quick rundown:
1) Islam is not only a religion in the spiritual and ritual sense but is also a whole set of rules concerning to politics, etiquette and warfare.
2) The main tenet of Islam is the concept of "tawheed". Translated directly it should be something like "oneness, uniqueness" but it also mean "monotheism".
3) Tawheed as a concept is pervasive in Islam. They believe in one and only one god (allah), believe themselves to be one and only one "people" ("ummah", reneging all tribal, national, ethnic or any other affiliation) and having one and only one leader (the caliph, leader of all muslim).
Now, about the attacks: someone who subscribes the original interpretation of islam (as described above and as written in their books) do not need to be in direct contact with their leader (the caliph) to be subject to his edits nor need to pledge allegiance in person.
All it takes is to pledge publicly and carry on his orders.
The spokesperson of ISIS (self proclamed caliphate, headed by the self proclaimed caliph Al Baghdadi) ordered a couple of months ago that every muslim must pledge allegiance to the caliphate (as it is their obligation by the rules of islam) and, given that the "ummah" is under attack in Syria and Iraq, that they must strike the "infidels" at their homes, schools, etc with whatever weapon they have (guns, knifes, cars, etc).
Have you guys noticed the uptick in unconventional attacks since last september? That's the reason.
All it takes for a muslim is to really believe al Baghdadi is the real caliph. There is extensive islamic literature to convince them of that, Baghdadi being a Phd in Islamic Theology himself.
