I'm carrying a capsaicin-based Walther pepper spray (pic related), and I've made a magnetic "bracelet", so that I can carry it on my wrist, and I'm able to deploy it without being suspicious (like having to reach into my pockets for it).
I think a pepper spray is the perfect means for self defense here, in the EU, because it's small, cheap, and most importantly: ranged. You don't have to get in close to the attacker to deal damage, and you don't have to aim at all, unlike with tazers or rubber bullet guns.

Course there is, leaf. The region where I live is as you describe. Anywhere further north than York and south of the Scottish border is good for what you want, though there's a region called Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland which is awesome. Stay out of the big cities and you'll be fine. Where I live is pretty cool too, a place near somewhere called South Shields.
If you want somewhere southern I'd recommend either Derbyshire or Somerset. Bristol is alright for a southern city.
