Look at any given Muslim country and you're looking at a place that used to be Christian (North Africa, the Levant, Turkey), Zoroastrian (Iran), or Buddhist/Hindu (Central Asia, Northern India, South-East Asia) but became Muslim because Muslims attacked and conquered.
Pretty much all major religions started off as peaceful little cults which spread through word of mouth and voluntary conversion - until they got big enough to be politically useful and then abused and corrupted.

Even if we could rewrite history and say that Christians really were crazed Muslim killers, what difference does it make? Modern day Christians don't do that while Muslims are doing it as we speak. No, killing was not an everyday thing any more than it is today. It was more common because there was more war and battles were being fought more frequently, but it was by no means "an everyday thing" one bit.
