The problem with government run pension schemes is that people trust the government and think they don't need to make any additional investments because the state will totally honor its promises five decades down the road.

If we didn't have this shit, the vast majority of poor people would have saved their money and the ones that didn't would be provided for by voluntary charity(which now have a much much easier time getting money because everyone has more disposable income and prices go down instead of up).
