It's incredible to me how the only perspectives posted here come from people who are nowhere near the conflict.

I was. Was for most of my life, in fact, and while I do not claim any moral right to impose my opinions, I do deny that right to anyone who only knows (vaguely...) what is going on because he watched a 10-minute segment in the evening news.

Here's what's going on: Israel and the Palestinian Authority are at war. Have been, on and off, pretty much from the moment both began to exist side-by-side. Each side has offered their arguments, and I am not about to look through them all, but here's (for what it's worth) the point of view of a liberal, peace-loving Israeli:

There is no doubt that Israel has the larger and more powerful force, right? There is no doubt that had the Israeli government and people chose to do so, they could easily enough wipe Gaza off the map and leave a smoking crater where it once stood. They don't. Why is that?

Many people would say it's because of international pressure, and that is certainly a part of it, but seriously - isn't Israel already losing this 'popularity contest' anyway? "Oh no, let's not do something that will make the world hate us, because thus far they were just showering us with love and support... Oh wait, that doesn't sound quite right..."

The real reason is this: Israel is a western, law-abiding democracy. Yeah, it's hard for all the pro-Palestinians out there to hear this, but we are. You know who isn't a democracy at all? The Hamas government in Gaza. Do you know how we know that? Because Hamas is actually listed (!) as a terrorist organization in both the US and UN records, both of which were determined independent of Israel's state on the matter.
>>
>>77015792
And why does being a democracy matter, you ask?
Well, here's why: In the full accounting of modern democracy (and by that I mean an actual one, not the pseudo-democracy practiced in Syria for example, where they declare democratic elections but only have the one candidate...) not a single democratic nation eradicated another nation. Even in cases such as the US involvement in Iraq that caused the pre-existing government there to be overthrown, the Iraqi people still exist, as do their national borders, flag and indeed, national status.

Israel, for all the wrongs so easily attributed to it by armchair generals the world over, is not about to go down as the first democracy to break that rule.

The fact is, Israel is more than willing to co-exist alongside the Palestinians, and indeed have done so for several years, always striving for some lasting armistice, if not outright peace. The same cannot be said of the opposition, where values such as "destroy Israel and take over their lands" seem to be the governmental norm (I do not know, and indeed will not venture a guess as to, the state of mind of the ordinary citizens there, of which there certainly are many).

What Israel will not suffer quietly is putting its citizens at risk. In that, we are no different than any other nation on earth. As with any democracy, the sanctity of life is paramount in Israeli values and laws (and is a core value of Judaism, the majority religion here, in general) - but when forced to choose between the security and well-being of our own citizens versus the Palestinian ones, there is not nor will never be any room for discussion.

Here are the cold, hard facts:

Operation "Tzuk Eitan" ("Protective Edge", I believe it is called in English, a more-or-less correct translation that inevitably loses some subtext, such as an implied resolve and assurances of our security) was launched following two pivotal events:

(1) The kidnapping and subsequent murder of three Israeli teenagers on June 12th, 2014, which led to the killing of a Palestinian boy by unlawful, extreme right-wing Israelis (currently undergoing trial for murder).
(2) Large-scale rocket attacks on Israeli cities from within the Gaza strip.

Ask yourself this: If you were a lawful, innocent citizen of a country now being attacked by [the official government of -] another country, what would you have your leadership and army do? Would you stand by? Would you "cave-in" to the demands of terrorists and leave your country because, well, they decided they had some imaginary right to it? (I will not bore you with counter arguments, but as I suspect someone might challenge this point in a future comment, I am sure I will get around to it at some point...)

Here's another point: The declared objective of Protective Edge is to cripple Hamas's terrorist activities, stop them from being able to target Israeli civilians with their rockets and mortars and then leave Gaza, with as little environmental damage and innocent casualties (for both sides) as possible. For that reason, the Israeli government warns Palestinian citizens of incoming strikes (air, artillery or ground, even though it actually compromises its own soldiers in the process by letting Hamas know where they will be), even to the point of calling them on the phone (!) and asking them to leave their house because there's a rocket-totting terrorist on the roof and they are about to shoot him down.

...I do not recall Hamas extending Israeli citizens the same courtesy.
>>
>>77016023
Furthermore, any actions performed by the Israeli army are planned in such a fashion as to minimize civilian casualties and environmental damage - from precision strikes using troops to surgical homing missiles with virtually no area-of-effect to actually holding fire when it is clear many innocent Palestinians are going to be killed (sadly, it is not always clear in advance). In fact, Hamas knows this point so well, they actually use their own citizens as human shields - going so far as to ask them to take to the rooftops so that the IDF will hold its fire. This is a far cry from Hamas's own sentiments, but also a very different strategy than the one officially employed by, say, the US in Afghanistan, who knowingly performed carpet-bombing that leveled whole villages because intelligence suggested there was a known terrorist in one of the houses, or who would destroy ammunition and bomb factories built adjacent to schools or hospitals (a practice that is also integral to Hamas tactics) because they estimate the immediate loss of lives to be lesser than the possible harm those factories could do later on.

And another point - just last week the Egyptian government (not exactly one suspected of being pro-Israeli) offered a two-day cease-fire in order to establish diplomatic negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel consented immediately. Hamas's answer? Rocket attacks on Israeli cities not two hours later.

All of this, and I did not even mention the tunnels burrowed by Palestinian terrorists of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad (you'll forgive me if I fail to distinguish between them, I hope) under the border, meant to allow for undetected terrorist incursions and kidnappings in Israeli territory.

And the real clincher? Gaza does not have the capacity to produce its own electricity or water in sufficient quantities, nor food, nor gas, nor medicine. Where do you think they get all of that?

That's right - Israel.

And not at a premium, if you wondered: free of charge! I have to pay my electric bill and my water tab, but the Palestinians do not (at least, not to Israel - what Hamas decides to charge in none of my concern). Does that sound about right to you? In any large-scale war, have you ever heard of a nation not only purposefully avoiding as much area damage as possible, avoiding gas deposits, avoiding food stores, avoiding the entire electric system of the other nation - but also providing that nation with these very same essentials?

(Funny story: while some of Gaza is indeed currently devoid of electricity, that situation was caused by a terrorist misfiring and hitting a high-voltage cable, not by the Israeli army. The Israeli Electricity Company, incidentally, refuses to fix the damage until the hostilities are over - but have promised to do so when such a time arrives!)

Still think Israel is “evil,” faggot?

The funniest thing is that it happened in Florida, a state that literally has zero gun regulation. You can get a gun (inlcuding assault rifles) without a licence, without backgound checks.

It's also trivial to get a concealed carry permit.

Yet no one was able to stop the shooter.

You know, some time ago I would have laughed but I am starting to think this is entirely possible.
The only winning scenario for US at the moment to save itself is war. But that would be a bad option for everyone and the US dollar WILL fall sooner or later. Maybe that is why Netanyahu is visiting Putin so often - he is planning to jump over to the Russian/Chinese side and let US sink.

To be fair, you'd have to be pretty crazy to bring a firearm when you're out getting fucked up. I know there were a few times when I was out with friends that if I had my 1911 on me, mistakes may have been made, because people are unsurprisingly more shit when both you and they are drunk.

There should still be at least a few armed guards though. Especially in fucking Florida.
