Look: they aren't banned, because they aren't banned for being gay, there's a restriction for 12 months after male/male sexual contact. There's a restriction for 12 months after sexual contact with a prostitute, too.
I think it's disingenuous to imply that it's "gay men" --- yes, gay men are going to be the primary people affected by this restriction, but it's a subset of gay men, so it isn't that "gay men are banned."

Just realized I'm not sure this is true for the US, but it's true for the UK and I can't be assed to go look up all the restrictions on blood donations again. The organ donation thing stands, though; the idea is to restrict blood donations from "high risk" groups.
