Donald Trump was literally insolvent after his first hotel, the Taj Mahal went bankrupt days after opening. He was PERSONALLY 900million in debt. His lenders didn't want to trash the Trump brand they invested in so they allowed him to restructured his debt instead of going through bankruptcy. They relieved him of around $350million and allowing him to repay over a much longer period of time. He was kept on as a figure head CEO with no authority in day to day affairs.
So while he's never technically declared personal bankruptcy, his business career ended in a massive failure leaving him completely insolvent and virtual bankrupt as he was relieved of his debt. From then on he sold his brand instead of actually running businesses. He has very little real business experience, and has mostly been a failure in that regard.
