Scenario: A criminal breaks into a house and encounters the resident. The criminal is a 6'3" 95kg male who decides he'd have a better chance of getting away with the crime if there are no living witnesses.
We will run this scenario with three different residents:
1) A healthy 6 foot tall 80kg man who works out regularly.
2) A healthy 5'4" tall 55kg woman.
3) A 6'3" 95kg 28 year old male war veteran with a dislocated arm and broken foot.
For this first set of results, we will assume gun control is 100% effective, and the criminal is armed with a knife or baseball bat.
Scenario 1:
The resident puts up a fight, but is overpowered by the criminal who has more experience in violence and is bigger and stronger. The criminal is injured and eventually caught as a result of these injuries, but the resident is still dead.
Scenario 2:
The woman is very easily overpowered by the larger, stronger criminal. She is raped and killed by the criminal, but the DNA the criminal left inside her leads to his eventual conviction. Still no comfort to the dead resident.
Scenario 3:
The war veteran would normally have been able to easily deal with the criminal, but due to his injuries is unable to fight back effectively and is easily killed. The criminal is never caught.
For this next set of results, let's assume (more reasonably) that the criminal, being a criminal, has access to illegal guns. The residents, being law abiding citizens, do not have access to firearms.
Scenarios 1, 2, and 3:
The criminal shoots the resident dead. Whether he is caught or not is of no comfort to the resident, since they are dead.
For the final set of results, we will assume that gun control is not as strict (or non-existent).
Scenarios 1, 2, and 3:
A shootout between the criminal and the resident occurs. The resident has the advantage of knowing their home ground and is easily able to either scare the criminal off, or incapacitate or kill the criminal. The resident lives.
