That's speculation that doesn't even hold up to the description of those times. Nobody in the Middle Ages had the time or resources to suppress women. They were expected to work and do their share simply because it was necessary. There are numerous laws stating that women will be allowed to continue their husband's business and from personal letters we can see they were writing just like we are today.
What made our civilization great is that we did not subjugate women but actually treated them equal by expecting them to do their share instead of treating them as stupid little children.
