Stalin grew up in shithole Russia, his father drank and beat him regularly, he lived as a literal roving bandit for much of his youth, kidnapping, assassinating and robbing people to make a living.
Modern "communists" grow up in a very comfortable luxurious capitalism, a capitalism essentially devoid of all the serious problems that communism even seeks to oppose.
It's as simple as that, our lives now under capitalism are good, back in those days, in those places, there was very little that was good, and there was very little reason to be good. I hate communism, but I can't blame many of the renowned communists of the past for fighting the society that utterly shat upon their soul for much of their life.
I think for this reason you will never find a true revolutionary communist anywhere in any first world western country, not today at least. Our lives are just too good, we all have too much to lose and too little to gain.

No, it didn't. Not really. The capitalism of the 19th and early 20th centuries was almost completely unrecognizable from it's late 20th century counterpart. The dialectical view of history holds that a Thesis is created, an antithesis is created to counter it, and the two come together and counter each other's failings with sythesis. The "capitalist" nations of the west took the good things from the socialist ideology and system and left the shitty things. The so called "communist/socialist" nations of eastern Europe took nothing from the capitalist west and became stagnant, which inevitably lead to their collapse.
