I've lived in Japan for a year and could have stayed there with a good fulltime job. However, I left Japan because I felt like I don't belong there. Possibly complemented with "reprogramming", which is some kind of soft form of hypnotism you consent to in which the therapist isolates some functional elements and roles of your mental life and restores harmony.
E.g.

The sad part is not negative per se. It is meant to have some kind of function (e.g. warning flag, seek attention and support), but we cannot allow it to take the lead when it comes to my job. It's like, say, having your angry part taking the lead when you are with your family: utterly unhelpful. The angry part can keep you alive if under immediate threat, but it won't help you sort out your shit with your parents.
Same goes for sad parts, etc. It is all about reducing cognitive dissonance in which there are parts of you that are doing jobs they are not supposed to do.
But this is the fucking theory or narrative. True story is that when you are under treatment, e.g. 1 hour a week, what *happens* during therapy is much more emotional and personal. What I have just written is, so to speak, the therapist point of view. But in lay terms, what happens there is that you cry, or you get angry, or you deal with some shitty representations of yourself, you let them speak like an actor, and then they are being convinced to change job or do something useful.
Possibly, after a while, you will be able to do some shit yourself. But first steps must be under direction of an expert.
