Southerners always feel united as Southerners. The confederate flag isn't about the confederacy for Southerners, it's just about having something that connects us all and separates us from the yankees up north that care little for bonfires, huntin', fishin', and livin' dirty in the woods.
There's a lot of dumb hicks flyin' the flag, and they stand out quite considerably, but it's really just an extension of the American Flag. Living the good ol' life in the south, drinkin' sweet tea, having loud parties, drivin' big trucks in the mud, having a good ol' time making machines, workin' the land, loving life to the fullest.
Really though, it's just something to share between us. Everyone just wants to be a group, when you see another man flying the Confederate Flag and you are a Southerner you see another man that shares your values.
A lot of people that don't understand think we stand for more racism, for slavery, for everything negative that you've been taught about the south.
But it's just our culture, it's about being a cowboy in the south, it's about the country lifestyle, and it's about showing your country pride.

Alcatraz was actually a prison used for holding suspected Confederate sympathizers back during the Civil War. There were even troops dispatched to deal a band of Partisan Rangers (pro-Confederate paramilitary groups, the same sort of groups who carried the attack on Lawrence in 1863) who started raiding banks in San Fransisco. It culminated in a shootout somewhere in Santa Clara with around a dozen killed. The Westernmost "battle" of the Civil War.
