The Crown is British. The Queen only recognises the British as her subjects/citizens. 400 years of loyalism is based on this very simple principle and that's what the British Armed Forces accept too. If you accept the Crown you accept the primary of Britain with it - it's not a choice you can't pick and choose - if you reject Britain you reject the Crown.
You cannot be "loyal to the crown" and reject Britain as a legitimate state. There is no English crown for you to be loyal to - there's only the British crown, and for as long as you reject your nation you're rejecting the crown that represents it.

It didn't happen overnight. In the armed forces they teach us that it's the Union of Crowns in 1603 (where both the Scottish and English monarchies were united for the first time as Britain) is when it began, 1707 is simply when it was put into written law (1803 and 1808 actually, since that's when Ireland became part of it, technically speaking.) The civil-war and then the Glorious Revolution 1689 (which is the basis of our current Britis state) are the two really important events imo - either way it took nearly 100 years from the death of Elizabeth I and James Stuart ascending to the throne to the Acts of Union and a few pretty big wars for the process to be complete.
