They were for a brief period. It would be a good time to go off on a long diatribe about how Egyptian history is largely unknown in the West. How people know something about the time of the Pharaohs and pyramids and then nothing until Cleopatra and that she had something to do with Rome.
How Egypt was conquered by Persia and then Alexander and then was a Greek-speaking bastion of civilization for thousands of years and the breadbasket of the Western world. That it was where Christianity gained its power, where the writings of the classical era were preserved during Europe's dark ages, that until Islam came and turned it into a wasteland it was directly at the center of Western civilization.
