Got married to my high school girlfriend right out of college. I'm 32 now. Never hit any of them and they all listen to me, because I'm someone worth respecting.
Of course if you're a middle manager at some dead end job your kids are gonna pick up on it, that you're not someone to be respected. So naturally they will try to find their own way. People hit their kids to control them, but if you're someone worth listening to your kids will find out sooner or later.

Essentially if you do a good job your kids will either avoid doing bad shit because they FEEL it is wrong or they experiment find out they make honest mistakes, they feel remorse/regret and dont repeat.
Being a good parent results in your kids avoiding disapointment out of respect being a bad parent means your kids will do whatever the fuck they want and keep you in the dark .

I was beat multiple times as a child, sure I wasn't the best kid, but you shouldn't get 30 bareass spanks for playing in church with the other kids and running around like a kid after a 4 hour church session, you shouldn't be picked up by the hair, slammed against a dresser and beat because you crushed a pack of crackers like in hanzel and gretel and made a path with them.
It got so bad, my drug addict step father had to tell my mother she was no longer allowed to hit me and my brother because she couldn't do it without going into a furious rage. That made it much worse for my brother though, as he was the son of the stepdads rival in highschool and named after him. He used to keep a car antenna to beat him with.
After my stepdad ended up back in jail, my mother went back to her abusive ways. I was about 14 when she found out I was looking at porn on my school laptop, and I refused to give it up. She tried pulling it from me, but couldn't match my strength, so she just straight up punched me in the forehead. I looked at her and said "If you ever hit me again, I'm going to hit you back, and you aren't stronger then me, I still have my laptop, now fuck off"
Within a year she had me brought to juvenile court, and asked the Judge to make me go to counseling, which I told the Judge I wouldn't do. The bitch ass Judge made it a court order then, and in a few months for the next court date, the Judge asked me one last time if I was willing to go, I said no, and was put in juvi.
I had a pretty cool roomate, I had to deal with this one fag who tried to test me, but thankfully I wasn't a pussy. I read books all week and refused all visits, and when I went back to court I again refused to go to a therapist and the Judge took the order off.
TLDR Abusive christian mostly single mother, until I was stronger then her, with no actual understand of how to raise a child. Put me in prison for a week, stood my ground and sort of won.

I tried to commit suicide at 14, and was kicked out at 17 with a job and over $1000 cash saved to fix up my grandmothers old car for a vehicle. So you can't say my mother ISN'T partially/mostly to blame.
I don't really prescribe to the whole violence begets violence, because the only fight I've had in the last 10 years since I left the house was with my ex-marine brother. Which I really only defended myself from when he rushed me in my room and punched my in the head while I was sitting at my computer and left a huge hole in the wall where I hit it.
I called the police afterwards, and as much as I now don't trust the police after arresting me after calling them, and my brother admitting that he started the fight. I would still probably call them again and my brother knows this and its a deterrent. We can actually have /pol/ like discussions now, even if sometimes we have to agree to disagree and stop.
If a screaming little shit wont shut the fuck up and embarrasses you in front of company or strangers, reddening his arse fixes it pretty fucking quick. Theres a difference between disciplining a child and beating your kids because you got too drunk and the boys at work make fun of your fat wife.

There is a certain age where spanking is the optimal form of punishment. That age being somewhere between 4 and 5. Before that, children CAN be reasoned with but pain teaches the lesson faster and more efficiently. After around age 4 you can start getting a bit more creative with your punishment. For example, my son put toothpaste on the dogs rump, so we made him scrape off the toothpaste and brush his teeth with it. Not enjoyable for him, and I doubt that he's going to do it again. Just an example. We rarely spank him anymore... once every 2 or 3 months, perhaps. Probably phase it out completely within the next year.

Why stop at ass beating? I think that if your kid is gonna remember not to transgress, regular stabbings should be in order! Throwing your child off the roof head first or even shooting them in the head can also be effective trouble deterrents for when their behavior gets really problematic. You can also go to their school at lunch time and shoot their best friends with a machine gun and toss a few hand grenades into the principal's office to teach them a lesson in good behavior.
