The ones who made them, tens of thousands of years ago, they were not so much different from you and I. They were human, and they made those imprints as a way of saying "here I am, here we were, see?". It is all that is left of them. Every other thing that was around them has vanished, the land changed. Even the stars no longer look the same.
Those imprints deserve respect, it is the last remnant of long-gone people, it reminds us of the human-ness of humanity, and the world is a bit more empty for having such an artifact destroyed.
