It's not that hard if you have family members or are educated enough to read, assuming you don't mind waiting a long time.
Plenty of my students are immigrants who had family members help them through the immigration process.
Part of me says that one of the big issues causing a surge in illegal immigration is that the Latino advocacy organizations who would step in and help people who were serious about immigrating but had nobody to turn to started dialing back operations in the 1990's because they thought that the mission was accomplished.
