I agree with you. I have a "friend" who voted for his grandparents with voting cards. He voted green in both of them even though his grandparents would have never done so. He just told them how much easier it is and how he can do the work for them.

The election didn't go as planned. Hofer was supposed to lose convincingly in the first round. The whole election wasn't serious for FP until the first few polls came in. It was meant to be a "better poll" to prepare for the next serious election. FPÖ wanted to turn the personal election into a party election and do "well enough". Then, Hofer outperformed everyone and shit got real. Hofer's crew had the FPÖ go all in and they did.
Having Hofer win would have been an unexpected benefit for Strache. He would have gotten rid of Hofer as a rival and receive support from the Bundespräsident for the national election.
Having Hofer lose convincingly would have pushed Hofer back into his previous role with no real chances at replacing Strache.
Having Hofer just barely losing was the worst outcome possible. The FPÖ is a one-man show. This put Strache into a bad position. There's only one leader. You know how this works.
Strache probably put his plan into motion on voting Sunday. He started to spread the rumors on Monday. He sold it to the party as favorable propaganda that further strengthens the victim role. The lower ranks will probably buy into it.
Kickl should know what's up. I'm 100% sure Kickl is NOT behind the accusations. He was very reluctant before. He probably sits this out and waits on public reception to declare and support the winner of this power struggle.
