Good music aside, there are quite a few theories out there.
The most plausible I've heard is that hatches on the deck were not closed properly, which compounded issues the ship was already having in the rough water. The most fantastic is that a gas bubble was released from a crevice below, which created a "hole" the ship fell into before being swamped.
