They're also one of the least religious countries, with about 52% of people identifying as 'not-religious'. Also, gays aren't treated well there either. Xenophobia/tribalism is an in-group/out-group instinct that isn't really associated with intelligence or IQ.
Homophobia in Western society is from old Judeo-Christian sexual morality and probably some sort of instinctive contempt for weak/effeminate males (who would mostly be useless in a tribal setting).
Religious worship is most likely associated with the middle of the bell curve (you need to be intelligent enough to really grasp "deeper" abstract spiritual/theological concepts, but not so intelligent that you're skeptical of them)
