Some of those countries used mass immigration to bring in cheap labor and compensate for the low birth rates. They might have been in big trouble without it. But maybe a declining population wouldn't have been such a problem if it wasn't for the need to be competitive with international trade?

To answer your question, socialism can work if the resources you are distributing are going towards people who will feasibly work and produce resources on their own later. That's not politics, it's just game theory.
The problem is that socialism assumes all humans are equal and distributes resources indiscriminantly, effectively throwing resources directly into the loo to be pooed upon.
Thus any form of wealth redistribution will only work in a nation with an average IQ above a certain number. This means that you can get enough of a payoff by distributing indiscriminantly because enough of your citizens will feasibly make something of themselves.

Socialism teems to look good for a few decades before it all crashes and burns. However, the Nordic model is not really socialist because the governed controls a very small amount of the means of production. It's just a vampire welfare state leaching off of a mostly capitalist economy.
