I'm a therapist. Here's my take: If you are depressed, you likely have a disempowering or disengaging root metaphor for your life (crawling in the dark, playing the hand your're dealt, in the lion's den, etc etc). These limit what you can imagine for your life.
Give yourself a new metaphor: "What if I were engaged with my life all the time?" Give yourself a metaphor that tells you you can achieve.
Two great tricks to use neuroscience to empower yourself: to increase your energy level or alertness, put yourself into the posture you assume when you are 100% engaged and energized. Sit up straight, head up, etc etc. Your brain will follow.
Second, if you are tired, disengaged, bored, uninterested, etc, notice the thought, acknowledge it, then select a new engagement: "Wow, I really don't find this bitch interesting and I'm bored. Isn't that interesting? I think I'll be engaged now." Your brain will follow.
