Quite a few big campaign overhauls have been made since it was released so you can have a look through those. The most popular realism based mod is Divide Et Impera, that's the closest you'll get to something like EB. Then you have a shitload of themed campaigns (some are modded DLC campaigns so watch for that) like a Spartacus campaign, a Rise of Christianity campaign.
Seriously there's a fucking shitload of mods. Vanilla isn't really that bad, the biggest detractor is the lack of family trees, that kind of sucks but you can still fiddle around with politics so it's not like there's nothing to replace it. I would honestly recommend giving vanilla (with reskin mods and shit if you like) a shot first and then DEI or whatever other campaign you want.

I can tell you right now Attila is hands down the most complex, most feature complete total war game. The strategic and tactical depth is amazing, there's family trees, disease, awesome siege mechanics and a number of other things.
UNFORTUNATELY it runs like a baby with no fucking legs no matter how good your PC is, so naturally I'd recommend rome 2 over attila.
Don't try to love attila yet, you will get incredibly frustrated with the poor performance, maybe give that one a shot if you get a new PC around the year 2020.
