I'm reviewing a book on the "cultural approach" to social studies right now.
I can explain to you what's the problem.
Anthropologists, in order to make their analysis, came up with general concepts.
So you have the "scientific / technical" world for culture.
What does it mean?
It means a network of meanings.
It means a series of items and artefacts that can embody such meanings and carry them around.
It means behaviours, codes of conducts, things to do.
All this definition is just meant for scientific purposes. In the same way you call "cell" a human cell, but also the bacteria is a "cell".
The problem is that MSM, public opinion and the press make the mistake of thinking that just because all things are equal in the laboratory or in the books of anthropologists, then they must be morally equal in the real world.
I spoke with an anthropologists and asked her what she thought of the mountain people she was studying. Answer was:

I said: how so? Don't you study them?
She says:
>Yes, that's my object. But imagine I study animals and see a lion eating its own cubs. Do you think I agree with eating my own kids just because I take pictures of a cannibal lion? I fucking despise this. My science is a thing, but my morals are different.
So here we have why the problem arise. Sometimes, for purely scientific purposes, things are put on the same level of analysis... because maybe the mechanism is similar, etc.
But on the moral level, we are legitimate to be disgusted.
However, the broader audience thinks that scientific neutrality is a good moral stance. Fuck no: neutrality is a tool of science. Not a moral goal.

Very true and well put. This should get reposted somehow maybe in a thread of its own. It's well worth a discussion, although I lack in this field.
I think, in general this highlights the loss of "moral" in our civilization(s). There is almost no discussion on the moral of things, for example on letting kids have two same sex people, or the morality of some islamic principles etc. Everything is put (because of some agenda, most probably) on the same, laid out level whereas things are definitely distinct in depth in their own essence.
I personally blame the loss of religion for that. I don't believe in sky daddy memes personally, but having a common set of dogmas is important to base your morality on. Justice and the government can't do this, they only care about stability, whatever that stability is made up by. Philosophy is too complex and requires thousands of hours of reading/thought/both. What are we left with? Religious dogma.
Anyway, what is the book's title ? This would be interesting to read about later.

Very good introduction. I wish it was more schematic. But if you are already proficient in the subject, you can avoid this book because it is meant for 1st year students who start thinking things culturally.

What I said is just the result of my studies in philosophy of science.
Science itself (and I refer to current practice, not just the idealized version. I refer to what people do nowadays) has a strong cultural dimension. So it is easy to mistake its cultural aspects from the truths it unveils.
Of course, you find truths about the world by engaging in scientific culture, which teaches you practices and how to look at things to unveil more truths.
However, you should not mistake the tools you use (conceptual, cultural stuff) for the truths you discover. That's exactly the trick that many do not get:

>they achieve their goals by cutting meat
>they are also at peace when cutting meat because it is a relaxing activity
>therefore, they conclude cutting meat is happiness
>so they force everyone to respect the knife holders, and also they say that everyone who is not cutting meat is not really happy.
But the problem is that they mistake means for ends. They get absorbed by the tools and the instrumental actions they undertake, and they claim that is the ultimate moral code.
But that's wrong. You can achieve happiness by doing other things.
Now you can take my cutting example to science.
By discovering truths, some people become happy.
To discover natural truths, you cannot deal with the world in a moral perspective, but in a mechanistic one.
Some people are happy with that. They see it helpful.
Problem is, they mistake their tool (moral neutrality), which brings results (truth, therefore happiness) for something that is moral in itself. Instead, what is genuinely moral is
>having goals in first place
>achieving such goals
So people who mistake scientific neutrality for the ultimate moral truth are like the people who are happy butchers and think no other happiness can be found outside the kitchen.
The problem is kitchens help you cook but don't help you heal diseases.

Read 'Nations and Nationalism since 1780' by Eric Hobsbaum, there's a great insight on French nationalism and how they came to be. I didn't really care much about France until I read this book, it's impressive how the Franks managed to pull that off.

Psychologically speaking (and on top of all the biological and historical determinism that makes you the person you are), only you are the source of your own goals. It is all about accepting, or rejecting things.
Of course, culture, history, and biology put constraints on what you can hope for or plan to do, and how you actually do that.
This is precisely when the religion you talk about enters the picture.
Religion, like other cultural aspects, provides the structural conditions to fabricate goals and other stuff. So it gives you some kind of safe playground in which you can fabricate meanings, goals, and projects.
Of course you can do all of that from scratch. That is, with philosophy and without religion. But philosophy is the attempt to build a house starting naked in a desert. There are many ways to do so. Maybe you can explore and find wood. Or you can draw blueprints on the sand.
Instead, religion might not account for ALL the ways you can build a house from scratch. However, there is something it gives you: it gives you pen, paper, a blueprint, some logs, some bricks, instructions, and friends. Maybe this is not the best way to do it... but for most people this is good enough. It cuts the middle men. It gives them direction without asking them to "shop" for directions in the supermarket of possibilities.
