Black democratic Christians in the South didn't want to vote for a New England white Jew.
In Democratic thinking, blacks cannot be prejudicial, therefore no one confronted this, but Hillary subtly dogwhistled her way to huge margins through the South which was the margin Bernie, the more progressive candidate, couldn't make up. Combined with her friends on the DNC, in the media, and stacking the superdelegates after 2008, she used her control of the party apparatus to marginalize Sanders enough to squeak through despite having no motivated constituency that wasn't professional.
Sanders couldn't have gotten around those advantages, but he could and should have attacked her hard on her scandals. The Clinton Cash stuff will be what kills her, and he should have pounded the hell out of that much earlier.
Now, he's passing. In a nutshell, he lost because of closed primaries which disenfranchise independent voters, when Bernie was polled to have at least 70% of the independent vote. In states with open contests he won by enormous margins, but in closed contests Hillary had the advantage. Another factor is in the mainstream media, which shut out Bernie Sanders from the public eye, making his campaign entirely dependent on Internet coverage.
But the visible proof is in the rallies, while Hillary has around 500 at a basketball stadium, 10,000 people or more gather at Bernie rallies.
He still has a chance to win at the Philadelphia Convention on the 14th. He just has to make the case that he is polled as more electable than Hillary against the Republicans, and that unlike primaries, independents are allowed to vote on the general election.
