This is very true. My family is from north-east Iowa, and my grandfather grew up speaking German at home. In fact, until the second world war, a lot of Baptist churches still had services in German only. I've heard from a lot of folks up there that the land resembles German farmland a lot, but having never been to Germany, I can't confirm that. It's darn beautiful country, though.

I went to Frankfurt maybe 7 years ago and it was a beautifully clean city. Tons of people out having picnics in the park or playing sports and jogging/cycling, music playing from stalls, it was wonderful, made me want to move there as an adult someday.
Have a Chinese friend who was there for business this year though and they say it's changed a lot, and not for the better.
