What's wrong with a degree in political science /pol/? I'm going to be picking a course to major in soon.

I want a job in politics. Should I take a degree in law or economics instead? Is political science a liberal propaganda course?
>>
>>76330234
Most politicians have experience in law or business.

Poly sci will teach you how to shit talk if you get into a debate society based on it. Law will teach you how to expertly shit talk, if you get into trial law.

Whats the outlook for Theology majors, i've always been interested in it. And I don't see why Business would be in shit tier. I majored in business with an emphasis in Finance and got a pretty good gig working at Big 4 and eventually started my own business with a friend.
>>
>>76331588
Yeah. I thought theology would be shit tier. Business actually sounds good

Is there a problem with law?
>>
>>76331775

Its because its americans making this. A business degree from a US public university gets you nowhere in the US and is filled with useless courses, business schools here actually pump out people that businesses want to hire.

Its not the same job market, and we don't flood ours with 10 quadrillion niggers who just barely passed ECON 101 with a little bribe from "coach" to the department.

You can make serious money with an art degree: hint add lots of programming. Silicon Valley is hiring lots of people if they have a strong foundation in CS and an art background.

Of course doing both yin and yang will feel weird oftentimes and if you have an artistic brain the programming will kill your soul but such is life.

Depends what you concentrate in. I'm a 3rd year doctoral student at McGill and there are literally zero liberals in the PhD program. Only a couple in the MA program.

Good pay too, I work for Pugwash and a few other non-proliferation consultancies in Canada and the US and travel a lot (Prague/Paris last year for secuirty policy and climate policy meetings with world leaders. Even met a few very cool delegates from Russia over the 6 weeks.) You just need to be dedicated and get involved and love what you do.

Don't listen to STEM idiots if they say it's a waste of time - believe me it is not. I got a BSc in Chem before I got my Poli Sci undergrad and then into this. Wouldn't change a thing. Any degree is what you make it.

Sage all advice other than this. I guarantee no one else on /pol/ has this much experience in either field.

even if you never plan on using the language at all, the very fact that you speak it is a huge plus to employers, as apart from anything else, the degrees are generally quite difficult, and languages are usually pretty hard to grasp for a lot of people.

Theology comes with one of the lowest expected salaries. Not sure if that's based on actual salaries, likelihood of finding employment, or the product of the two though.

That said, why on Earth would you want to study it anyway?

a piece of advice i'd offer you if you plan on going to barter for stuff anywhere in Beijing is to be firm with them, and offer around 10-15% of what they're asking for the good. They see foreigners and treat us like cash cows, and usually manage to rip off people who aren't savvy to how things work in cultures that barter more.

Also, a good place in Beijing to go shopping for souvenirs/fake clothes, watches, etc. is Silk Street Market.

>>76340773
yeah, that'll definitely be useful - be prepared as the Chinese tend to get very emotional when it comes to bartering. Be prepared to have them shout or talk very loudly as a way to pressure you into paying a higher price for it, and also don't be surprised if when you try and walk away if they refuse to come down on a price, for them to run after you and grab ahold of you and tell you that they changed their minds, it's actually pretty hilarious to witness how they do it.

Also, you can always speak english if your chinese fails, but it's definitely a good idea to start out with the Chinese, they will probably be less likely to take you for as much of a gullible tourist that way.

I don't think so. It is a pretty hard degree, at least the way I did it.

As I said, I had to study everything from semiconductor physics to programming languages.

Anyways, I know people who did, theoretically, the same degree on other universities, and they are a joke. They don't have a clue of what they are talking about.

>>76342845
I did it and it was not limited to hardware. In fact, if I were going to design hardware, for example, motherboards, I would have to learn some things I did not enter into (HS PCB design)

But anyways, I don't remember half of the things, because I don't use them and it's imposible to remember everything. The important thing is I acquired the capability to open a book about any topic on the matter, and learn everything in a short period of time.

When I say that a major is meme-tier, that's not to say that it is NEVER going to be worth doing, it's just that at least in the US, you'd be hard pressed to make a decent living with psychology - there are certainly some who can make very decent money through it by playing their cards right, like you have, and starting their own practice, or something like that, but the trouble is that you're in the minority, most people won't be able to do what you've done, and would be better off pursuing a different major.

do u realize crude oil dropped below $30 earlier this year? trust me, i knew because i took a bit hit on trading crude oil futures.
look how many people lost their jobs. the reality is that crude oil is a limited commodity meaning there is only a certain number of barrels. I believe that number is about 1 trillion. with all cars going electric in the next few years, the US will be less dependent on oil. causing spot price to plummet. companies go bankrupt, etc. so yes, petroleum jobs will disappear.

I don't know anything about law.

I am a computer science student right now, and I will tell you this: you better like math if you want to be good at this stuff. The whole "CS people are stupid" meme comes from the fact that a million tards enter CS courses at mid-tier universities every year because "I like teh make da vidya games". Those people are chased out of the program at any school worth its salt, and at lesser schools released into the world as retards incapable of doing anything worthwhile.

If the degree is called "software engineering" instead of computer science, it's worthless.

If it's computer science and there aren't multiple 300 and 400 level math classes you have to take (especially discrete math and number theory), again, it's worthless.

I assume you mean for undergrad?
I'd advise against law, as it really won't help you get into law school at all, and you'd probably be better off with something like philosophy, history, etc.

Comp Sci is one of these mid level kind of majors that can really be hit or miss, i'd advise against it, since like most other STEM fields, it's very easy to outsource, and is quite an oversaturated market at the moment.

Granted, this is the exact same case for law, but it's more highly regarded than comp sci.

If your end goal is law school, and not just an undergrad degree, take pretty much anything and then just do the LSAT.

>>76345044
People on here will probably scoff at a business major, but I did a BS in Bus. Admin. and it's been great for me, as I was able to knock off a year for my MBA, meaning that I was finished college and grad school within only 5 years, instead of the 6-7 that people would usually spend going for an MBA.

If you can go to a good school for your post grad, you'll be 100% safe with a business degree of any kind.

>>76345308
No problem, m8 - perhaps I was a little harsh on psych when I called it meme-tier, but at least from my experience with psych majors in the US, this tends to be the case, that being said, there are certainly ways that it can be an extremely good pay off, especially if you enjoy that kind of work (working with people, etc.).

English is really that bad? Its pretty versatile if you ask me. Unlike something like journalism where you are restricted to very few jobs English can go anywhere pretty much. There are a lot of companies that will hire english majors to do things like write up reports. You could also get into writing just about anything. A lot of journalists are english majors. Why is it so bad?

I would actually like some advice. Im trying to become a sports writer but I felt majoring in journalism would be retarded because I would be forced to be a journalist. As mentioned above Id like a versatile major where if journalism doesnt work out I can apply for any job that requires knowledge of writing/grammar.
