My personal theory is that all humans have a yearning of belonging. This means that since our countries do not do social education in schools, people grow up to look for their own place in the world. This is where some of them make less than good choices. Tattoo/piercing culture, gang related environment, hating your own country, etc etc.
I think a lot of the problems the west has would go away of early school years focus on making people interested in the legacy/history and current situation of their own country, as well as heavily encouraging people to join sports clubs and other places where you get to socialize and share experiences with your fellow countrymen.
