this. these debt collection companies buy your debt for pennies so the creditors can claim a loss. current year man bought some of that debt from the collectors worth nothing compared to the actual amount owed.

It's debt. After awhile, most of it is late fees and interest and etc. Debt collectors can buy this debt for cents on the dollar, then they make tons of profit when/if they settle with a debtor somewhere in the middle. Meanwhile the hospital writes it off, gets tax breaks, the debtor settles the debt for much, much less than the original debt, and everyone involved wins. Except for the taxpayer.
Here, he just buys the $15million debt for $60k, and instead of collecting $100k+ from debtors to settle that debt, he just forgave it. Took a $60k hit himself to 'save' people $15million.

He didn't even help anyone by doing this. All that debt was most likely already written off as uncollectable. So he's basically just wasting money, which makes sense since he's a Britcuck.
