Not really. We started with the Greeks, than the Romans, Roman became Christian and than died. Than we got the domination of Christianity in the middle ages where pretty much nothing happened. During the height of Christian power the religion spread exactly like how you describe the Muslims. The church was basically a caliphate until the Protestant reformation happened, and the Protestants were frankly just as fanatical until the age of monarchies ended.
Our modern world has an ethical basis in Enlightement ideas about equality, liberty, democracy etc (which frankly I feel are outdated like the monarchies before them). While certain Protestant branches (especially in America) like to marry this to Christianity, the idea that Christianity has been the torch-bearer is a myth. The idea came about in the 50s when the Republican party was taken over by radical religious people. This is also where we got the idea Christianity has anything to do with nationalism.
No one takes this whole Christian crusade vs Muslims thing seriously outside of internet forums. Christianity is helping put the Muslims in Europe.
I'll tell you a bit of history. Do you know how Christianity spread, like the tactic it used up until about the 20th centuary? Helping the poor, it basically provided welfair services in exchange for converting. However once socialism was invented the religion's ability to convert went down, as poor people's loyality went less to the church and more towards the state.
Bringing in poor refugee's and feeding them is extremely Christian. It's a tactic going all the way back to the 1st centuary. And frankly religion in Europe is dying because it's no longer something white people do. That's why the major branches want to import poor brown people.

To give you an idea of how completly fucked up the use of swords in Christianity is: if you are a knight, or even a crusaders, and you kill someone that's a sin. In fact it's a pretty hefty sin that can send you to hell.
It was not uncommon for lords to pay monks to pray on their behalf to have God forgive them for all the killing they do (pretty good cash for the monks too). In the case of the crusades the crusaders were all given indulgences, which is basically a free pass on sin.
