I like that the Ukraine has fallen under a nationalist government, but a good third of Ukraine was Russian territory until administrative provincial reestablishments under the Soviet Union and their "nationalist" government just seems like it's selling out to NATO and the EU just to spite the Russians(to the glee of the West).
As far as news goes, there are a few firefights here and there but since the conflict attracted global attention it's been essentially frozen for the past year. Putin admits that Russian agents are operating in Ukraine, too. Otherwise I'm not quite sure where to look for developments.
Maybe Russia could prop up an independent Donbass government?

Eastern Ukrainian area. Fought to separate itself from Ukraine when Ukraine couped to a right wing NATO and EU friendly junta a few years ago.
From the American/Globalist perspective, they're bad guys, from the Russian/Nationalist perspective, they're good guys. Then again that's really subjective.

Who knows? Ukraine and Russia sides tell opposite stories. Ukraine claims there is Russian army fighting an Ukrainian army there. Russia denies military presence. Ukraine claims people are tortured in Donbass on routine basis. Russian side says the same thing about Ukraine. Russian side only talks about Ukrainian army bombing Donbass civilians.

It's probably a mix of the two. Since there's so much attention on the conflict and Russia right now, it seems like most of the operations going on are clandestine and guerilla warfare.Taking out things like power stations smuggling arms and equipment from place to place, terrorizing the opposite sides through gradual attrition and media assault.
