In 20 years, speaking Chinese will be as simple as speaking whatever your mother tongue is. Everyone will be able to communicate fluently with everyone else in whatever language they choose.
>>
They said that 20 years ago.

I suspect your friendly reminder is worthless.
I have had a BA degree in Mandarin Chinese since 1986. They told me back in the early 80s it was going to make me rich.
I make money from several other languages, but none from Chinese.
I think the simple fact is that the Chinese just don't NEED foreigners to speak their language, nor do they particularly want us to.
There is a huge Chinese diaspora in almost every developed country in the world, so there is an almost inexhaustible supply of perfectly bilingual English-Chinese, French-Chinese, German-Chinese speakers, all of them of Chinese blood (whom Chinese INFINITELY prefer to work with).
Mandarin is a waste of time - unless you love Chinese poetry, of course.

>US is largest economy

>no one in Japan cares to learn English because they have full opportunities without it

If you're in the US, you'd have to be completely fucking retarded to think you should learn chinese.

The only people it might effect is third worlders who want to leave their shitholes (good luck succeeding in China compared to any western country). Even then China has none of the soft-power the US has in entertainment and the likes. People nowadays learn English just because so much entertainment is in English.
>>
>>76212357
No, I don't think so.
The situation with Russians is dissimilar in every respect to the one I described with the Chinese.
The Russians, I would guess, are happy to have people learn their language and are not so pathologically xenophobic as to never want to trust anyone of non-Russian blood to be their interpreter, for example.
But even if there were a reluctance, the Russian diaspora is much smaller so they would HAVE to use non-Russians for interpretation and translation.
There are maybe 10,000 Parisian-born mother-tongue Russophones, tops.
There must be close to half a million Parisian-born Sinophones, with thousands more young Chinese couples arriving and giving birth here every year.

>Why go through the extra work when a majority of Chinese hardly speak it?
With this logic, why learn any language other than English?
>>

I think you're jumping the gun there.

>Implying Japan isn't a dying, declining country
>>
>>76211772
Mandarin is both easier and harder than I thought it would be. The best thing about it so far is that you can read the characters if you own native language in your head. It's not exactly best practices for learning, but if you're in a hurry, it's the one great thing about non-syllabic writing systems. You can essentially "read" Hanzi in English.
>>
>>76211443
It's the other way around. Anyone who doesn't speak English in 20 years will not be employable even in their own foreign countries. Nobody speaks Mandarin outside China and some SEA countries, you can find English literally anywhere in the world, if you are in an area where English is not understood you are somewhere in a jungle tribal village or something.
>>
>>76213903
Full time + benefits. It's education of course, since that's pretty much the only way to get a VISA unless you're rich or work for a multinational, but I hope to pivot into private business in a few years as well. There's so much growth and opportunity and money flying around it's insane--definitely the place to go if you have an entrepreneurial spirit.
>>
>>76214286
I struggle mostly with remembering which tone goes with which word.
I can read a lot of characters and I can write them in our alphabet, but the tones are really hard to remember so I don't really speak yet.
>>
>>76214546
Cool, don't let them screw you over.
When I went to go teach in Beijing the first school I worked for screwed me over hard. So, I went to a better school which was fairly modern and they paid for housing and likes.
>>
>>76214695
I recommend pic related. I thought the method sounded gimmicky at first, but it actually does work--really well. As for remembering tones, just listen to a shitload of recorded conversation exercises. It's like music, you can't "study" it, you have to practice, and you passively retain it.

>>76214947

This. Chinese is spoken almost entirely by Chinese people. Most English speakers know it as a second language, and it's used as the international language of business, aviation, sea travel, etc. Perhaps most importantly, over half of the internet is in English. It's the language of international communication, and probably will be for a while.
