I'm a grad student researching AI right now.
This is the age of AI. What will happen over the next 20 years is people will just throw machine learning algorithms at everything they can think of and see what sticks. The obvious things are self driving cars, natural language applications (eg Siri, Google Now etc). Computer vision is nearly a solved problem in most domains at this point.
But we are still no where near a "sentient AI", "conscious AI", "strong AI" or whatever term you want to use.
The way these things work is, I give you a giant data set of examples. The algorithm finds a "program" which minimizes the error on that data set. In some sense this approach is truly universal. If you can give me a properly labeled data set, I can give you neural net which solves your problem.
"Strong AI" is quite different from this though. In a strict theoretical sense, current machine learning techniques could lead to strong AI, but practically this will not happen. How could you give me a "data set" for a strong AI. What would that even mean? Fundamental break throughs in unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning will need to happen first. But trust me people are working on this. There are legions of child prodigies doing PhDs on this shit right now.
