Reserve personnel are far better to deal with because their life probably isnt so unbelievably fucked that they have to sign away their souls for 8 years just to have a roof over their head. Reserve soldiers usually do it for college money, good benefits, healthcare, signing bonus, and technical training that has civilian application.

I wouldn't say that we're all anal/miserable. It generally depends on the day in my opinion. In short here's whats going on:
>National Guard/Reservist that deploy have just about a month to readjust from combat situations to living in the civilian world
>Active duty have a longer time to adjust from combat. However they've spent a large portion of their life living under military life so adjustment is also difficult.
Every vet deals with this adjustment differently some are perfectly fine, others are not so lucky. I lost a team leader in Afghanistan and one of my interpreters. On top of that I had three of my friends die from suicide and one from a parasite he contracted in Afghanistan as well. All of this within a span of about a year and a half. Shits tough to deal with and vets tend to carry that sorrow.
Civilians cant understand or assume that we're assholes because, for the most part, they have never been through such experiences. Imagine losing 6 of your family members in that short span of time while having to be away from the rest of your family for a year or so. You my friend would be "anal/miserable" as well.
Shit sucks but you have to push through because we are living for those that didn't make it back to live with us. And I know this because I would've been part of those 22 a day statistics as well if it wasn't for my guys that became a part of that statistic.
So if you see a vet just thank them for their service. We're human as well we all need some sort of acknowledgment in our daily lives. I'm sure if more Americans did this, we wouldn't have this social problem within military ranks.

I'm in the canadian naval reserve, and both reg force and reserve variants of every branch have been pretty cool dudes. I'm yet to exchange more than a few lustful glances with any other states' militaries, though, but I've noticed that the new zealand and australian exchange program guys we get are pretty well behaved, and I've never seen the US navy guys that occasionally far around get up to no good.

It depends on the rank. If you run into an E-4 or lower (possibly some E-5s), then it's safe to assume they're pretty chill. The exception is if you run into the ones who plan on making a career out of it; then it's more likely they are douches.

When I was 16 years old I worked at a Boston Market in walking distance of Fort Totten. They would routinely come in to get food on their R&R time or whatever. Lots of blacks, in fact almost all of them were minorities.
VERY pleasant to deal with as a server/cashier. Ear to ear smiles, polite, incredibly disciplined.

Most US Marines are cocky as fuck and arrogant at a young age. They learn that "they are better than any other branch of service". Its how the Marine Corps works and why it is so successful. They mature with rank and billet and by the time they are E-5 they are humble to all except there subordinates.
The most part of the USMC that i honestly hated was the 4 year college kid officers in the wing, which is where i was. They are just cocky teens that shove enlisted in the face all day. Most officers who start out in the wing don't do more that 4 year contract. Most of the duty stations are 3 years and they just had too much fun to care enough to do anything hard, which is what they know is coming next.
Army is just bags of shit, almost 75% of the army is literally just the water that accumulates at the bottom of a public trash bin.
Navy is usually quality, they are given too much freedom at a low rank and usually turn into retards and the young NCO's are equal to a senior lance in the Marines. Every naval officer 04+ or E6+ is fat and nasty.
