Hawking is a physicist. A very good physicist I admire for his contributions. I have myself read much of his work.
But Hawking having an extreme grasp on physics, and having undergone extensive training and having worked with it for decades does not necessarily make him have a good understanding of politics. He is not down there with the "common" working class people. He is not part of the majority who have to live through these decisions. Hawking does not necessarily understand what he is talking when it comes to this. This is about people and not just that, it's a wide field that covers everything from the greater perspective of economics that impacts, I dare say, the entire world to the life of the common man and the conditions which he has to live in.
Hawking is the wrong person to say anything about this. Just like the pope is; they are both great authorities on what they do, but that does not make them great authorities on politics and chances are people will listen to them not because they are right but because of their name which is a dangerous road.
Want some real comparisons to historical fanatical leaders and their followers, where they followed rather because of who rather than why? This is a better comparison than Donald Trump or some right wing party in Europe.

The privilege of the white blue collar worker is to get up early, go to work, then sometimes go to a second job, get home, get something to eat, fall asleep, repeat until you retire and get nothing from the government. Pay taxes so these college kids can feel good about themselves and give the money to mahmoud and his 10 children.
My father started working when he was 14 and had to retire at 60 because he literally broke his body working.
