A combo of both, really. In cities, where people can walk around, this happens a bit, but a lot of people have concealed carry licenses (unless you're in a ghetto, where nobody has a license and, depending on how bad the ghetto is, might just have a MAC 10 sticking out of their pocket) so it's a gamble to pickpocket in the US. And, most of the US is suburbs and country (or at least semi-rural, where there are houses and malls and stuff but there are fields of nothing every few blocks), so you need to get in a car to get anywhere (unless you're willing to walk 2 hours and 19 minutes to get to a grocery store).
