My grandma was a young girl during WW2. Her family did not want to join the ranks of the Nazis. They had a farm and would give Jews food secretly. The Nazis found out, came, and threatened to burn down their whole farm if they didn't stop.
Later, as the war was going, her father and brothers were conscripted to fight for the Fatherland.
Based on this, I'd say that some people liked him; but most of it was fearmongering like in North Korea. If you did follow the party though, life was probably fine. The society looked good but it probably wasn't ideal for many individual citizens.
