We hadn't recovered from WW1 yet, the empire had been rebuilt and our economy had recovered but our armies and such hadn't, after world war 2 we just couldn't afford the empire anymore. Money was spent on the NHS etc, the generation of British people after those that fought WW2 were placated, lazy, entitled and knew nothing but peace.
