What really sets apart Assad from being a brutal dictator is that he is going pretty darn softly against the opposition. He is not a strongman who just bombards everything into shit then calls it a day (like his father), but a typical western politician who dances around the problem trying to defuse it with... random stuff (you can see Merkel doing this with the rapefugees), then cries in the media about not succeeding, blames others, and bends over for a bigger power (Russia in this case) to save his ass.
The biggest tragedy of this civil war is that Assad had a chance to survive by having a "healthy democratic secular Syrian revolution", because that's how it all started. So let me get this straight: at the very beginning, there was a secular and democratic Syrian opposition. They were mostly intellectuals produced by Assad's modernizing efforts (read: they were your typical bleeding-heart liberal faggots with art/social university degrees). They were mostly neutralized in the first month or so... one way or another (most of them simply left when they realized the futility of their revolution). AFTER this, the revolution spread to the countryside and beyond, where people angry because of the drought wrecking their lives jumped into the bandwagon. Unfortunately, these people were all dumb peasants under Muslim Brotherhood influence or guest workers returning from Saudi Arabia. Before Assad could do as much as blink, the revolution turned from a secular uprising to an islamist rebellion, and he couldn't do much to retain control. The many enemies he has accumulated in the last decade then kicked in the door with some mercenaries and Chinese toys, and the rest is history.

Well, like it or not, I think it is a fact that a genocide did happen back then. And Germany admits to the Holocaust and is still making amends for it, even if very few living Germans personally had anything to do with it.
Likewise, no living Turkish citizens were involved in the Armenian Genocide, but somehow you have some pigheaded pride that doesn't allow you to talk about the mistakes of the past.
To me, it seems to be a combination of tacit agreement of the Genocide from living Turks, and a totalitarian belief that mistakes can not be discussed out of fanatical loyalty to the state. Even if the state back then was the Ottoman Empire and not modern Turkey.
