I agree that those sources in the OP are questionable, but you're right, the mainstream media would not talk about this if it was the truth. There would be too much of a shit storm for them. Reporters have resigned from major media outlets in the US with the reason that parts of or their entire stories were censored by their bosses. Ahh, they had me going for a little while there, but this preppers part ruined it. It doesn't seem likely the feds would expend the manpower to steal a couple months' worth of canned goods from some guy's basement.
Still, the Superstation95 expends a shocking amount of detail to debunk the Snopes article which discredits them. It would be a lot easier to just ignore the debunking altogether, if their objective is to appeal to fringe tinfoil readers.

It makes perfect sense. They don' want free and independent people, they want millions of serfs that are dependent on the state to survive.
Centralize control, destroy the nation state and create several different regions that all work on different things. One region for industry, one for agriculture, one for production etc. You need machines to produce food, you need mills to refine grain into flour, you need bakeries to produce bread etc. The idea is that no nation or state should have all those things and that makes them easy to control.
