I think war in the future is more than possible but there are so many possibilities for the actual cause.
Let's start with the familiars. For one, tensions with Russia aren't getting better. Russia's position is threatened big time. They see NATO's continuous advance eastward as a serious threat to national security, and they should, because they are at risk of being surrounded.
They have the middle east and China to the south and eastern europe has always acted as a buffer/shield to separate them from western europe.
Problem is now that Ukraine and maybe the baltic want to pursue a more western orientated foreign policy, and in Ukraines case, membership of the EU and NATO.
This means America can be at Russia's front door. In easy range of Moscow and St Petersburg. This to Russia is unacceptable. And so Russia may well fight an offensive, preemptive war of self defense.
Seeing as Ukraine is a hot bed of CIA and rebel activity right now, it isn't so farfetched to think that Ukraine might end up being a full scale state on state war, and seeing as that drags the western world into an actual war, that makes it a real contender.
Second contender is China and Japan having pissing contests in the pacific.
Japan has upped its game having changed its constitution to finally be able to take its military abroad (in aid of allies) and to also expand its military beyond its defense force. It has been doing this for a while anyway and modernizing its navy well beyond defense force needs.
And of course Japan is a military protectorate so America would be obligated to go in (not sure if this has changed). However, America is also keen for Japan to increase its military capabilities so it can ease the burden on America in the pacific. Japan is America's vassal. War could break out and drag us all in though.
Third is India and Pakistan. Both hate each other. Both have nukes. Both are running short on water.
