If you were alive during the Soviet Union what do you remember about the everyday life?

Even if you weren't alive during the Soviet Union how were things after the collapse? I'm no retard, I'm guessing they were pretty bad. A political over hall like that is no easy task.

Also how did your older family members feel about the West after that?

Personal stories would be very cool.
>>
I was born in the 90s, but my family lived in Poland during the entire communist period.

>long ass lines for everything
>everyone got an X amount of food per month, you would get tickets for X amount of beef, X amount of cigarettes, X amount of chocolate, etc (some people would trade cigarette tickets for chocolates ones and shit) [this was similar to the welfare system they use in the US]
>signed up for a list to get a car or home (this could take 10+ years)
>$20 was equivalent to a monthly wage
>jobs were easy, they literally couldn't fire you, so guys would be sitting around drinking beer
>atheist regime that spied on everyone
>people would go missing randomly, priests were beaten to death and whatnot

Communism is the reason why Eastern Europe is so behind today. It froze the entire half of the continent in time for 45+ years.

My family likes the US, but we still hate Russians and Germans. I've got some good first hand stories about WW2 where soldiers from both countries got BTFO'd if you're interested.

My parents say it was good times in general. They lived through all of it. Yea at times people were poor, little good food, but there was a great sense of community and belonging. They told me how on Christmas they were excited to get a few fruits like oranges because they were so rare

Imagine being happy even if you don't have everything in the world. In the West most people have luxuries but are still unhappy because of a fragmented society.
>>

Also this.

>Imagine being happy even if you don't have everything in the world. In the West most people have luxuries but are still unhappy because of a fragmented society.

tbqh, almost nobody was allowed to leave the country, so nobody knew how poor we really were since there was no contact with the outside.

What country is your family from?

Moscow was fucking White. They didn't allowed asian subhuman a to migrate to European parts or Russian settlements. Now Moscow has 5 millions asians out of 12 million population.
>>
Born in 80s, Russian Far East (near Japan).
Worst time I remember was 1997, when retarded "democratic capitalists" fucked up everything and suddenly all money overnight became worthless.
Late USSR was okay here, you had to stay in lines to get some of rarer stuff, but our family got free apartment from state, so it had its benefits.
Father was working as second officer on trade vessel which was doing international routes, so we had plenly of foreign shit at home, including japanese auto, japanese fridge, japanese TV.
During collapse, nothing really changed for us, except flood of cheap foreign trash food like chokopai. We got our first home PC in early 1990s, I learned QuickBASIC and norton commander. Other only noticeable change after collapse was that we often had electricity/water blackouts because mayor of city was engaging in permanent war against governor of kray and both had feud with Moscow.

I remember things coming from Russia were always low-quality, lol. The TV sets would randomly burst into flames, fridges would stop working, cars would constantly break down. They were the cheapest, so we had a lot of it, though.

I had a neighbor whose family fled from communist russia in the 70s or something. They were a very nice family, but apparently one day their son was wearing some che guevara shirt and came to visit my younger bro, and my mom started asking him questions about it and he basically just said the usual modern lib speak of revolutionary blah blah blah.

I was very disheartened when I heard that story.

1. how is it so easy to brainwash a kid who's family actually left a place because of the policies you support

2. how did his parents even allow him to wear that shirt in their presence? Maybe they didn't know who he was, but I doubt thats the case.
>>
>>76030848
Some people made a lot of money off communism. Corrupted politicians, policemen, priests led good lives. A lot of our people here turn on their own countrymen to kiss up to the higher up communists in Russia. I wouldn't doubt your neighbors left in the 80s when things started going south for communism.
>>

>They told me how on Christmas they were excited to get a few fruits like oranges because they were so rare

It's funny you mention that. My grama just died. She was 90 plus years old, but recently she told us about how on Christmas in the dustbowl 1930s depression one year she got an Orange.

This period had the hottest summers in the country's history, and they were suffering through the great depression.

What time period was it when your family got the fruits?

Similar story to my great grandma's, except that it was Czechs. They were kind and would bring treats for my grandma.

Soviets were drunk apes. Almost shot my great grandma for no reason, stole all of the shoes my great grandad was fixing, sold it in a town and bough vodka.

Everybody was equally poor in USSR.
But whenever a Russian defends USSR "it was good until Gorby", I can clearly state that it is pure jealousy because somebody else has it better.
That's why Russians hate America.
Not because Americans want to destroy the world or allow Jewish degeneracy (these two can be countered) but because Americans simply have everything so much (that's why Russians call Americans "pindosi").

Born 2 weeks before Russian troops moved out completely out of my country.
Have a lots of stories tho.
Grampa (RIP) viewed Soviet Russian rule as generally more positive because he had right connections to high ranking members of Central Comitee and his general "social status" was better than 95% percent of population. Worked along the Jews (even spoke Yiddish a little).
My dad created business during privatisation, my grampa lost about everything (he had a lot of obligation papers basically turn worthless and didn't know what was concept of "shares" in any way).
Great grandfather was exiled to Krasnoyarsk krai steepes after the war because he was better off than average (had some land, 2 story house).
My gr. grampa, grampa and dad are stubborn as hell. Me - not so much. Probably because I had my life given on a plate

Concentrated push to destroy the country by US intel agencies.

It was a combination of the USSR's own fuckups with external pressure to fracture them as quickly as possible.

Probably the only way out of it would've been to start WWIII, which thankfully they didn't.
>>

Sorry m8 I don't buy anything you say. The USSR didn't exist when you were born. "Born in the 90's" could very well mean 1999 as much as 1990, and you sure as fuck aren't remembering much of anything about the USSR whether you were 10, 5, or 3 years old because it no longer existed.

Experiencing a post-collapse society isn't the same thing as what the OP is asking about, and quite frankly I get massive jew vibes off you.

I went to an ultra lib school, and I majored in econ. But I seem to remember some story about how after the SU collapsed, basically everything they had tried to grow industry was AGAIN tried by the world bank to grow their industry after the SU collapsed.

So that the SU invested heavily in modern industrial plants. That works very well for a period of time(maybe we are seeing that with china, but they are also liberalizing industries so its sort of different). But once you invest that heavily in those manual labor industries to the point where they reach their peak they have no where else to go but down.

I have a feeling that is what happened. I also think China saw that the same scenario was knocking on their doorstep so they somewhat liberalized their industry.

Now if they did it enough is what we'll have to wait and see.....

One part of family(mother side) were typical peasants. Grandpa(rip, I remember kissing his dead body on funeral) had a farm that oldest son get. I sometimes help them with work. Hard work but satisfying. Other son get part of the land in other village. After i was born family my parents live there. We have well and every deep underground stone cellar.
My mother worked as accountant for a big cooperative national farm. They have plenty of land, machine park and they help local small farmers with work. It all go to shit when privatization hit(after fall of PRL).
My father was simple worker. Drink a lot. Jealous as fuck. Not good combination as you can guess.
His father moved to Silesia after II WW and get a postGerman farm as a land grant. Worked for a Party. As far as I know he was kicked from it for a funds theft. Grandma(resettled from Vilnus) was in Peasant Party and in traditional culture music band.

Was born in 1965. In 1982 I got admitted to diplomatic academy - German and French department. Graduated in 1986 (earlier than supposed to), because I joined KGB on second year. I was dating a girl who was heavy into Church stuff. I go to few meetings.
It was full of cheap tricks that I must admit would leave me impressed if I didn't know how it work. And I see people who fall in trance or something. Kinda amusing but i hardly could stop laughter. But songs and atmosphere of old churches is great.

I see some modern churches in UK and they>

I never ruin threads by saying poo in the loo.

but in all that time you thought you were poor did you ever imagine shitting in the street?

I'm being very serious here.

For all the crap this board gets for being antis emetic, the average indian poster gets at least 10X the garbageposts

I just want to know in all honesty how a modern western nation dealt with abject poverty.

To believe or not believe is up to you, we are on anonymous forum of very weird origin after all. Statistically speaking it's highly probable, since almost 19 million Soviet citizens were involved with KGB. You'd get arrested for that. There were "public toilets" everywhere, some of them are just wooden huts with wooden floor with hole in it, linked to shit canister underneath, but at least you could have some privacy there and it doesn't smell outside.

One of my friends is dating a girl from Ukraine.
She is gorgeous and traditional as fuck.

I mean, she dresses like a normal girl.
She drinks, goes to parties, all the normie stuff.
But you can just tell in her attitude, that she is shy, traditional and loyal, like all proper women used to be. And she is a ballet dancer, to boot.

Your culture is based.

True.

The point that she still have it mean that they not need it that much.
The country was sabotaged and destabilized by CIA mostly. They used Church as a tool to distribute money. Shortage in goods caused strikes and that caused shortage in goods. Both sides use provocations to make it bloody - Security to have pretext to crush it and show that they have force and CIA to cause more riots and strikes. And then they strike deal and Party get rich on national wealth when people get nothing.

There were KGB spies not only among citizens in Soviet Union but also in other Eastern Bloc countries as well.
And the general society in Soviet Union was of "stukachis" (like when you do something not according to the State's policy, you can be turned in to KGB by your neighbour).
Soviet Union was really a Socialist Police state, where freedoms of speech were not valid after you say something.

Yagoda is hardly mentioned because he was purged and most American schools hardly go into the details of the USSR other than "communism is bad mmkay." Also, the Holodomor didn't kill seven million. The Holodomor was only part of a larger pattern of famine in 1932-33, and some estimates place the total death toll at under 7 million.

Yes I always wondered this as well.

As a child they always told us "in Russia they don't even have toilet paper" - I thought it was propaganda & not true

But oddly, it seems to be true... In socialist countries there ends up a shortage of toilet paper... Why?
>>
>>76043104
Most basic consumer goods become scarce in communist societies. Communism aims to provide for the "common man" by artificially setting the prices of these goods really low, most of the time lower than it costs to produce them.

The end result is that private producers would rather not produce at a loss, and state producers get theirs stolen to sell at the black market for 1000% profit.
>>
>>76043505
>"state producers get theirs stolen to sell at the black market for 1000% profit."
Basically you explained how "blat" system worked in Soviet Union.
>>
>>76042934
>How do you expect governmental planning comitee to know exactly how many times do you poo in the loo and how much of toilet paper do you use to wipe yer butt?

This is one of the built in flaws of a planned economy, and it is very hard to make leftists understand why it is like that.

>>76043505

they basically kill all the incentive to produce any of these goods, because profit is "evil".
>>
I have family who visited the USSR several times in the 60s and 70s. They were mostly in Leningrad. They said that much of the city itself was absolutely beautiful and that there was lots of classical architecture and cultural activity available to everyone, but that the residential areas looked rather meager compared to back home (rural New England).
Thoughts?
>>
>>76043505
>Communism aims to provide for the "common man" by artificially setting the prices of these goods really low, most of the time lower than it costs to produce them.

That would be irrelevant in a communist society since the government owns and makes "profit" from producing the goods.

>The end result is that private producers would rather not produce at a loss, and state producers get theirs stolen to sell at the black market for 1000% profit.
There are no private producers in communism or at least not supposed to be.

USSR had multiple problems, Russia was very corrupt even before the revolution which ruins any planning so
>state producers get theirs stolen to sell at the black market for 1000% profit.
And since there was a Cold War the production was more focused on military goods rather than consumer goods which lead to scarcity of basic goods such as toilet paper.
>>
>>76044091
But you can't just magically conjure a perfect communist society, you must pass through a transition period, this is where things go south and millions die generally.

What they have seen was tip of an iceberg.
You have to live for years to understand what is it like to be in a socialist dysfunctionalism.
>>
>>76044386
Yes that is the problem. Communism is not a perfect utopia and neither is capitalism or any other economic system we have right now, however it is important to study all available ideas to see the benefits and the problems with each one. The problem is that everyone on /pol/ who supposedly believe in free speech refuse to discuss things seriously and just recur to muh dank memes.
I highly doubt Russia would have done much better after being destroyed by 2 World Wars if it was capitalistic if it did not receive any US help to rebuild after WWII(which was proposed but refused for political reasons afaik).
>>

US capital lifted up Europe, Russia would have taken decades to rebuild correctly after WW2 (without trying to rush industrialization and ruining everything else in the process), time it did not have because a war with the US was possible. The US on the other hand was unaffected by the war.
>>76045378
East Germany was under Russian control, it did what Russia told it to do. Historically all a huge part of the resources of the Russian Tsardom/Empire/USSR/whatever else were spent to maintain its large territory. If it stopped supporting the cities in the far east and focused on developing its western territories it probably would have been much richer but would have lost the land because you cannot really hold land without having any population present there.

You Baltics bring it on yourself.
>fight against white for commies
>then fight commies
>wonder why commies see them as not trustworthy
But it was common tactic used by Soviets. It sound great on paper.
Resettling untrustworthy population form borders and crucial areas when they can cause trouble to isolated and underdeveloped areas in back when they are easy to control and work for glory of Union.
Things is local commies steal tools, food, clothes(actually everything) from deported population so people land in foreign land with bare hands and many die in transport.
I bet it was your grandpa Lithuanian Neighbour who sold him.
>>
>>76046989
You are literally supporting my argument.
The situation during Imperial Russia was similar if not almost exactly the same.
>Strong central government to prevent dissent from regions (expensive and inefficient)
>Strong army to defend extremely large territory (expensive)
>Strong security apparatus to keep population in check and prevent dissent (expensive)
>Poor common population because you have to maintain all of the above.
Russia has operated like that for centuries because of necessity be it during communism or capitalism. Find me an exception.

neo-liberal shock therapy thrashed the nation into a worse depression than the "great" american one; it was the rise of insanely wealthy young oligarchs and a complete free for all between bandits, veterans, cops and generals that guaranteed the primary inheritor states of the USSR would lag so badly behind the west. the USSR stopped building communism after the death of stalin and was then run by inert octogenarians espousing generic authoritarian state capitalism, but they are not to blame for the salt poured into the wound by gorbachev. the average soviet citizen was experiencing great increases in standards of living in two eras: the 30's and the 60-70's. in the latter the quality of living was comparable to weaker american satellites or neutral countries like spain or greece and at that point the gulag was virtually entirely an ordinary prison system

lithuanians, latvians, estonians, polish, west ukrainians, they wanted to leave, so be it. apart from them, the soviet people voted overwhelmingly to preserve the union in the one true democratic poll ever taken in their country. just look at any islamic republic. womens rights have taken a massive slide back, dictators as bad as kim jong un but friendly to the USA are everywhere, and people in these places see the dissolution of the USSR as a mistake overwhelmingly. Russia has bounced back in the last decade and a half while most of the former USSR stagnates: their cheap labor floods in like the mexicans flock north but russia no longer has any obligation to invest in their home countries.

it is the baltics that jump for joy at any sign of suffering from their former brethren, it's the poles and banderites that can't stop crying about katyn but completely ignore their own mass anti-semitic graves and the CIA black sites they host- fuck them. the germans, japanese, even finns are all respectable, they have legitimate grudges with the communists but at least they don't go into emotional hysterics about the USSR.
>>

>>76048213
Yeah, no, this is wrong. The Commies were worse in every way. There were precedents and parallels, but in every xase the Commues were worse. When Lenin was sent to Siberia, he was given a cabin and allowed to own a shotgun. When Yezhov sent people to Siberia, the conditions were somewhat different.
>>

Born in '93 Lithuania. Few years after the collapse but growing up I heard plenty of stories of how "it was all better with CCCP" etc., and witnessed the aftermath of it first hand. There are people still today who claim that it was better, everybody had jobs (you were imprisoned if you didn't), everybody was paid well (but there was literally nothing to buy so people bought anything they could, hence homes full of worthless crap), people expressing opinions disappearing, working hard for the benefit of yourself was prohibited, everybody was supposed to be equal and being equal meant nobody having anything and so on and so forth, I trust other anons to elaborate further.
But from what I saw myself growing up I'd rather kill myself than go under Russian rule. Hordes of drunk asocial people crowding around kiosks, trash literally everywhere, pollution in every lake and river, someone working hard and earning a good wage was (and sometimes still is) seen as a capitalist thief benefiting from the common people. But I don't blame them, people were conditioned into thinking that anyone more wealthy is automatically a thief. I could go on but my breakfast is ready.
